Got your message. Thank you for considering me for a position.
I'm interested in your work on knowledge based systems. As you
probably noticed in my resume my experience is more in inference,
but have had a long interest in representation. I don't usually
login a SUMEX but will try to catch you for a talk.

BRUCE, WE CURRENTLY IN A FLURRY OF ACTIVITY SURROUNDING THE
UPCOMING WORKSHOP IN JUNE. WE HAVE A TENTATIVE AGENDA
AND WE ARE GIVING SOME THOUGHT ON THE DEMONSTRATION FACILITIES
FOR THE WORKSHOP. ON FEBRUARY 7, WE ARE GOING TO HOLD A
PRELIMINARY SESSION WHERE WE WOULD LIKE TO DISCUSS THE PRESENT

INVITE YOU DOWN TO NEW BRUNSWICK FOR THIS PRELIMINARY SESSION.
KAZ KULIKOWSKI, WHO IS NOW IN HAWAII, WAS ORIGINALLY GOING

PLEASE DO YOUR BEST TO COME. I BELIEVE YOUR TRAVEL COSTS WILL

Here is a rough draft of the letter that I plan to send to the people
we want to invite for the psychology part--namely, Abelson, Collins,
Colby, Rieger, Rummelhart, and Schank. Any comments corrections, additions
etc. are welsome.

Dear ←←←←←←←:

I am writing to you concerning the Artificial Intellignece in
Medicine (AIM) Workshop which will be held at Rutgers University on
June 14←18. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together
researchers who are active in the fields of Artificial Intelligence
in Medicine and in Psychology. The focus will be upon attempts to
build knowledge-based systems which are capable of high-level reasoning
within the kind of open domains which are of interest to the biomedical
researcher. Within the medical area we expect researchers involved
in the DENDRAL and MYCIN projects at Stanford as well as investigators
in the area of medical diagnosis from Rutgers, Pittsburgh, Carnegie-Mellon,
and MIT to participate in the workshop. Within psychology I hope that
Abelson, Colby, Collins, Rieger, Rummelhart, Schank and yourself <deleting
the name of the person the letter is set to> can participate in the workshop.
We are still in the planning stages, but we hope that the workshop will
provide an opportunity for the various research groups to become acquainted
with each other's work. We plan to have the various systems available
for demonstration and use on the SUMEX system or through the ARPANET so
that the participants can interact with other systems as well as
demonstrate their own work.
The first day of the conference would probably be devoted to each
paricipant presnting to the entire group an overview of their work so
that points of intersection could be identified and explored. This
would probably work out to a half-hour presentation from each
participant. The next two days would be devoted to more intensive
activity demonstrating the systems and interacting with each other in
a more technical and substantive way. The fourth and final day of the
workshop is planned as a more general session which would be open
to a broader group of professionals who would be invited for this final
day's session. The idea here would be to provide a forum for
disseminating the results and experiences of the participants
to this larger group.
We would be able to cover your travel costs to New Brunswick and
also meals and accomodations during the conference. We would probably
also be able to provide meals and accomodations for an additional member
of your research group if this would be appropriate. Travel money is
unfortunately quite limited, and any help that you might be able to provide
from your own grant resources would be appreciated. Additionally, we would
be able to provide technical assistance in bringing up your
system on the SUMEX machine and/or in making appropriate arrangements
to access your system. We plan to develop an overall control program
that will allow the participants to access each other's programs in a
uniform and hopefully transparent way.
I hope that I have presented the Workshop in enoght detail to
engage your interest in participating in the workshop. We hope to make this
workshop an annual afair and, therefore, it is important to us to involve
active researchers like yourself to help us to make this first workshop
a success as well as to help us to define the goals and format for future

workshops. Since we are now in the intensive planning stage I would
appreciate receiving your reaction as soon as possible.

                                              Regards,

←←←←←←←←←←←←←
With regard to the meeting on Feb. 7---I will try to plan to be at
Rutgers then. I didn't know about it so thanks for informing me.
I will check my messages daily and be looking for your comments on
my proposed letter.

HI,BRUCE,
I HOPE THAT YOU CAN MAKE IT THIS FRIDAY. HOW IS THE SITUATION
WITH YOUR FATHER'S VISIT? GORRY WONT BE ABLE TO STAY
UNTIL SATURDAY, SO WE WILL HAVE TO PLAN ON AT LEAST ONE WORKSHOP
MEETING ON FRIDAY . IF YOU CANT COME BY ALL MEANS DELEGATE
SOMEONE WHO CAN HELP CONVEY THE IDEAS OF YOUR GROUP.
WE ARE PARTICULARLY KEEN TO GET ENOUGH PRELIMINARY PLANNING
FOR THE CONFERENCE DAY DONE SO THAT THE
ANNOUNCEMENT CAN BE SENT OUT SOON. IS THERE ANY WAY OF GETTING
THAT ACM LISTING BY THURSDAY SO THAT IT CAN COME OVER WITH
YOU?
SORRY THAT I COULDNT STOP BY ON MY WAY BACK FROM HAWAII.
THE PROBLEM WAS THAT WE FINISHED THE GRANT PROPOSAL VERY
LATE AND I HAD TO DELAY MY FLIGHT EVEN A SECOND TIME.

THE MESSAGE THAT SRI RELAYED ABOUT TRAVEL EXPENSE COVERAGE
IS OUR BEST GUESS AT THIS TIME. DEPENDING ON THE NUMBER OF
PEOPLE COMING FROM ELSEWHERE AND THE COST OF THE
PRELIMINARIES WE WILL HAVE A
BETTER IDEA OF THESE ESTIMATES AROUND APRIL OR SO.

HOPE YOU CAN COME
 BEST REGARDS,

JONATHAN IS OCMING ON FRIDAY IN MY PLACE. WE HAVE ME WITH JOSH AND
TOM RINDFLEISCH TO DISCUSS OUR FEELINGS. AMONG OTHER THINGS, WE THOUGHT
THAT A WORKSHOP OF SUMEX-AIM USERS (THE ONES WITH PROGRAMS) WOULD BE MORE HELPFUL THAN A WORKSHOP OF PROSPECTIVE USERS AND SKEPTICS.
THE STANFORD GROUP CAN TALK ABOUT AND DEMONSTRATE DENDRAL PGMS, MYCIN AND THE PROTEIN CRYSTALLOGRAPHY WORK -- WHAT WE WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT
FROM THE WORKSHOP IS (A) WHAT OTHER AIM RESEARCH GROUPS ARE DOING AND
(B) WHAT PGMS THEY HAVE DEVELOPED THAN MIGHT POSSIBLY BE SHARABLE.
MY OWN FEELING ABOUT ORGANIZATION IS THAT SUBJECT AREA IS BETTER FOR NON-USERS AND METHODOLOGY IS BETTER FOR THE HACKERS AMONG US. THAT
WAY THE PHYSICIANS INTERESTED, SAY IN DIAGNOSIS WILL BE ABLE TO HEAR
MORE THAN ONE WAY OF GOING ABOUT IT. HACKERS, ON THE OTHER HAND, WOULD
BE BETTER ABLE TO TRANSFER IDEAS FROM ONE DISCIPLINE TO
ANOTHER I THINK.
JONATHAN PLANS TO TELEPHONE TO FIND OUT WHAT PLANNING HAS ALREADY
BEEN DONE. HOPE IT IS A FRUITFUL MEETING -- SORRY ABOUT MY COMPLICATIONS HERE.

HI,BRUCE,
I HOPE THAT YOU CAN MAKE IT THIS FRIDAY.

I'M SORRY THAT I AM UNABLE TO COME TO YOUR PLACE ON THE 7TH. I AM GETTING TOGETHER WITH TOM RINDFLEISCH TOMORROW TO TALK ABOUT A
STANFORD REPRESENTATIVE. JONATHAN KING MAY COME.
THE DENDRAL PGMS ARE REASONABLY PATIENT WITH NEW USERS -- WE'RE DEMONSTRATING THEM HERE THIS WEEK. MYCIN IS REASONABLY USEFUL ON NEW PATIENTS. SO WE'LL HAVE SOMETHING IN JUNE.

While we were linked today you mentioned a message that you had sent
me concerning the Feb. 7 meeting. I looked through my message file
using BANANARD and no such message exists in my file. So either I
misunderstood you or the message didn't get sent for some reason. If
the latter please send it again. If the former, I'm sorry.

Re Monday meeting--I talked to Chip and he is planning on being there
on Monday. We were going to get together at 9:00 to talk some first
so anytime after that is OK. We thought the meeting probably wouldn't
be until 10:00 or so anyway.

My resume is included. Will be happy to supply more
information. If needed please send a message to <RSMITH>
at SUMEX. I have a good knowledge of INTERLISP and TENEX.
However, recently I have mainly used UCI LISP, which is
Stanford LISP with the BBN LISP editor and break package.
Relevant to your project, I was recently involved in a
joint proposal to ARPA on Intelligent Terminals with
Lederberg, Feigenbaum and Suppes as PR and co PR's.

The University of Texas at Austin, Department of Computer Sciences,
	9/68 to 8/73. Ph.D. in Computer Science, August 1973.

Experience

Norwegian Institute of Technology, Department of Refrigeration,
research assistant, 11/64 to 12/65. As part of my research I
developed a control system for a refrigeration plant, using
standard electronic blocks performing logical functions, instead
of the previously used electromagnetic relays. In addition I
worked on computer programs for processing refrigeration test
	data.

Norwegian Institute of Technology, Dept. of Applied Mathematics,
1/66 to 8/68. University Fellowship. Research with a project
on Computer time scheduling. I had concentrated my studies on
the combinatorial problems appearing in solving educational time
tables. The work resulted in a method, which uses a system of
checks to avoid entering an assignment that makes the timetable
impossible. A program for constructing timetables for the
Norwegian secondary schools was written. The work required use
of Algol and assembly language on computer system Univac 1107.

Experience (cont'd)

The University of Texas at Austin, Dept. of Computer Sciences.
Teaching courses in programming languages (Algol, Fortran), 9/68
to 5/71. Research in Artificial Intelligence, 2/70 to 8/73. Work
mainly on Automatic Theorem Proving, supervized by W. W. Bledsoe.
Experiments with resolution based theorem proving programs (in
LISP) were conducted. My Ph.D. thesis deals with mathematical
problems concerning the length of the resolvents in derivations
and suggests a new strategy for resolution. An investigation of
search spaces in Problem Solving and Theorem Proving was undertaken
with L. Siklossy. In addition I was responsible for implementing
Micro-planner on the system at U.T. (CDC 6600) in 1971.

Data Processing Financial & General Co., New York City, 6/69 to
9/69, Computer system specialist. Besides other work I wrote a
large portion of an accounting routine for an IBM 360/65 system.

Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, MIT, Cambridge, 5&6/71.
Assisted Prof. Bledsoe in his work on computer proofs of theorems
	from Real Analysis.

Stanford University, Institute for Mathematical Studies in the
Social Sciences, 10/73 til present. Research Associate.
Worked on projects for teaching university students Set Theory
and Symbolic Logic by computer, supervized by P. Suppes.
I was mainly involved in designing the system for accepting and
representing set theoretical proofs. An important contribution
was writing a theorem prover for checking larger steps in the
proofs. The program was operational in the Fall quarter of 1974
and Stanford students in Philosophy were instructed Axiomatic
Set Theory by computer. Furthermore I wrote a new program for
processing interpretations of logical formulas, which is a part
of the Logic course. All work was done in LISP and SAIL on the
TENEX system for the DEC PDP 10 computer.

Information about the upcoming workshop in June is being collected and
made available over SUMEX under the directory name of <SRIDHARAN>.
The common file name for all information is WKSHOP and various extension
names are being used to separate different kinds of information.
Each of these files is in the format of MESSAGES; this gives
a convenient DATE being labelled onto all information so that you can
know how old this information is and also query whether anything
new has been added on since you read it. You may use any of
READMAIL or BANANARD or RD to read these files.
Give the F command to READMAIL to direct it to read files
and give it the filename <SRIDHARAN>WKSHOP.extensionname .
Give the R command to BANANARD and give it the appropriate file name.
Issue DIR <SRIDHARAN>WKSHOP.* to EXEC to get a list of available
filenames.
Please browse and send me your observations and thus take part in
shaping the workshop to your taste and ideas!

 TED,
I AM VERY GLAD THAT IT LOOKS AS IF YOU MAY BE ABLE TO ATTEND THE
ENTIRE WORKSHOP. WE HAVE JUST FOUND OUT THAT IT WILL BE OVERLAPPING
THE A.M.A. CONVENTION IN ATLANTIC CITY. THIS OUGHT HAVE NO
EFFECT ON THE PLANS OF THE M.D.'S THAT WORK WITH US, BUT IT MIGHT
AFFECT SOME OF THE PEOPLE WE PLAN TO INVITE TO THE GENERAL SESSION.
WE WERE THINKING OF RESCHEDULLING IT TO THE 14TH(SATURDAY) JUST
BEFORE THE START OF THE AMA CONVENTION, AND THEREBY POSSIBLY
GET SOME MORE PEOPLE THAT MIGHT BE GOING ON TO ATLANTIC CITY.
THERE IS AN ADVANTAGE FOR US IN THAT WE THEN NEED MAKE ONLY
ONE GENERAL PRESENTATION TO SUMMARIZE EACH PROJECT'S STATUS.
THE DISADVANTAGE IS THAT WE CANT PRESENT THE CONCLUSIONS OF THE
WORKSHOP TO THE GROUP. THAT, HOWEVER, CAN STILL BE DONE BY
PREPARING A DRAFT TO INCLUDE IN SIGART,SIGBIO OR ONE OF THE
COMPUERS-IN BIOMEDICINE JOURNALS . PLEASE LET ME KNOW YOUR
REACTION TO THIS AS WELL AS THAT OF OTHERS AT STANFORD.BEST REGARDS,

BE GOING ALL DAY, PERHAPS YOU COULD AT LEAST SCHEDULE THE MYCIN PRESEN-

TED,
SORRY TO HEAR THAT YOUR GRADUATION WAS NOT RESCHEDULED. BUT IT
WOULD HAVE BEEN DIFFICULT TO HAVE HELD OFF WITH THE DETAILS
UNTIL MONDAY IN ANY CASE, SO I AM GLAD THAT YOU HAVE DECIDED
TO COME OVER HERE FOR THE WORKSHOP . WE HAD GOT YOU SCHEDULED AS THE
KICK-OFF TECHNICAL SPEAKER
AT 9:30 A.M. , IT IS LUCKY YOU MENTIONED
YOUR PLANS NOW, SO WE CAN CHANGE THINGS. WE CAN PUT YOU AS THE LAST OF THE MEDICAL APPLICATIONS SPEAKERS, THOUGH THAT WILL
STILL BE IN THE
MORNING(ABOUT 10:30 OR 11:15 AT THE LATET IF WE CHANGE THINGS AROUND. MAYBE IF YOU COME IN ON THE FLIGHT THAT
ARRIVES IN NEWARK AROUND 6:30 OR SO YOU WILL BE ABLE TO
GET A COUPLE OF HOUPS OF SLEEP BEFORE HAVING TO
GIVE YOUR TALK. WE WOULD PUT YOU IN THE AFTERNOON, EXCEPT THAT
THE MEDICAL PAPERS TAKE UP THE ENTIRE MORNING, AND THE AFTERNOON
IS FRAGMENTED INTO PSYCHOLOGY, CHEMISTRY AND TWO PANELS(ONE ON
METHODOLOGY AND ONE ON SHARED RESOURCES AND NETWORKING) SO MYCIN
WOULD BE A BIT OUT OF PLACE THERE. SINCE THE MEDICAL APPLICATIONS
ARE CONSIDERED THE PRIMARY ONES IT MAKES SENSE TO HAVE THEM FIRST RTHER THAN LAST.
I HOPE IT WORK OUT OK FOR YOU.
WE WILL HAVE THE LATEST VERSION OF THE WORKSHOP SCHEDULE
UP SOON.

I'LL LOOK INTO AIRLINE SCHEDULES AND LET YOU KNOW WHEN IT APPEAARS
I CAN MAKE IT ON THE SATURDAY MORNING. AM I CORRECT IN REMEMBERING THAT
THERE IS ESSENTIALLY NO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION FROM NEWARK TO NEW BRUNSWICK?
IF SO, I MAY HAVE TO RENT A CAR I GUESS . WHAT ABOUT ACCOMMODATIONS AT
RUTGERS? IS ANYTHING BEING SET UP FOR CONFERENCE ATTENDEES, OR SHOULD
I TRY TO WORK OUT SOMETHING ON MY OWN? AT ANY RATE, PUTTING ME LATE IN
THE MORNING MIGHT BE BEST UNLESS IT TURNS OUT THAT THERE IS NO CONVENIENT

TED,
THANK YOU FOR MAKING
SOME GOOD SUGGESTIONS FOR THE WORKSHOP.
1. FOR THE SUNDAY SESSION , I AGREE THAT YOU CANNOT JUST HAVE A DEMO.
WITHOUT FIRST GOING INTO MORE TECHNICAL DETAILS THAN COULD POSSIBLY
  HAVE BEEN COVERED ON SATURDAY.
2. WE WILL PRODUCE A DOCUMENT WITH SUBITEMIZATION OF TOPICS. I FEEL
THAT IT OUGHT TO BE A SEPARATE ADDENDUM TO THE SCHEDULE.THE TOPICS
CAN BE ALLOTED TO EITHER THE SEMINAR TIME SLOTS OR THE SPECIAL
   INTEREST GROUP MEETING TIMES.
3. THE WORKSHOP WILL BE HELD AT THE CONTINUING EDUCATION CENTER AT
RUTGERS. IT IS A LARGE HOUSE WITH DORMITORIES, AND DINING FACILITIESSO THAT THERE NEED BE NO PROBLEMS OF FINDING SEPARATE ACCOMODATIONS
OR MEALS.WE WILL TAKE CARE OF ALL THE COSTS OF ACCOMODATIONS AND MEALS.FOR THE TRAVEL, WE WILL MAKE ONE GRANT TO EACH
PARTICIPATING RESEARCH GROUP, AND HAVE YOU SPLIT IT AS DESIRED.
A LIST OF EXPECTED PARTICIPANTS WILL ALSO BE MADE OUT FOR EACH
GROUP, AND THE TRAVEL GRANT WILL ATTEMPT TO COVER
A REASONABLE NUMBER OF THESE. IN THE CASE OF STANFORD, I THINK
THAT THE BUDGET CAN COVER ABOUT 5 OR 6 PEOPLE. THIS
WOULD INCLUDE A FEW FROM CHEMISTRY ALSO.WE HOPE TO HAVE A MORE
DETAILED AND FINAL ESTIMATE BEFORE THE WEEK IS OUT.

SO, IN TERMS OF CAR RENTAL, IT WOULD PROBABLY BE BEST IF SEVERAL
OF YOU FROM STANFORD DID COME INTO NEWARK TOGETHER AND RENTED
A SINGLE CAR TO USE AS A "STANFORD VEHICLE" WHILE YOU ARE HERE.
THE ONLY WORKSHOP RELATED MOVING THAT WE HAD IN MIND WAS FOR
THE FIRST DAY, WHICH WILL BE HELD AT THE HILL CENTER(OUR
BUILDING) AND WE WERE PLANNING ON RENTING A BUS FOR THE TRANPORTATI -ON TO AND FROM THE RESIDENTIAL CENTER.BUT IF ENOUGH
PEOPLE HAVE RENTED CARS THAT MAY NOT BE NECESSARY.
REGARDS,
KAZ.

I finally reached Abelson today. He like the others is not happy
about having MIT and Aim workshops back to back, but he is coming. However,
he does not want to give a talk at the general session and suggested
that Roger Schank could give the talk describing the Yale work since
Roger is much less inhibited about such things and therefore it wouldn't
be a lot of work for him. I thought that Bob would suggest that. So
the question is now whether you want to drop that from the schedule or
whether you would like me to contact Roger to see if he will give
the spiel for the Yale group. Please let me know as soon as possible.

Kaz,
Got your copy of the workshop schedule and the invitation letter,
and I must say it looks as though the conference will be both alot of fun
and plenty of good interchange. The items we mentioned the other day did
not have a specific spot on the schedule, and I wonder if their roles in
the conference should perhaps be made a bit more explicit before the
schedule is finalized. I am thinking particularly of the topics of time
awareness in diagnostic programs, and quantitative models of medical
reasoning. These seem to fall within the topic you have named "Problems
Of System Development", but if we wish to respond to Dr. Myer's concern
that physicians may find the agenda overly computer oriented, a renaming
of that or other of the sessions might be wise. May I suggest,
for example, something like "Time-Dependent Processes In Disease And
Diagnosis - To What Extent Must These Be Modeled?" and "Necessary
Characteristics Of Quantitative Models Of Medical Reasoning". These are
off the top of my head, and better versions could no doubt be concocted,
but I would like to vote for the explicit inclusion of these two topics
within the plans for the technical sessions.
Also, haven't heard from you re. the question of accomodations in
the Rutgers area, but Bruce tells me there is a Ramada Inn or something like
that which is not to far away. Is that the best place for us to try to
book rooms at?
As for the letter, it seems to be fine. I hope there
will be a good response to it. Who are the people to whom you intend to
send it?
	Best wishes,
		Ted

I CONTACTED COLBY TODAY. HE IS COMING. HE HAS THE FOLLOWING REQUESTS.
(1) A SINGLE ROOM. (2) IS THERE MONEY FOR TWO GRAD STUDENTS WORKING WITH
HIM...NAMELY ROGER PARKINSON AND BILL FAUGHT? HE SIAD THAT HE THOUGHT THAT HE COULD COVER THE TRAVEL FOR HIMSELF AND ONE GRAD STUDENT BUT NOT
THE OTHER. HOWEVER, HE SEEMED TO INDICATE THAT HIS CURRENT GRANT HAS
NOT BEEN AWARDED RO SOMETHING SO EVEN THAT SEEMED A BIT IFFY. IN TALKING TO SRI YESTERDAY I FOUND OUT THAT THE BUDGET SITUATION MAY BE RATHER
TIGHT. THEREFORE, I SAID THAT I WOULD HAVE SOMEONE FROM THERE CALL HIM
TO WORK OUT THOSE QUESTIONS WHEN THE BUDGET SITUATION IS CLEAR SINCE I
DON'T HAVE THE SLIGHTEST IDEA WHERE THINGS ARE AT I DON'T WANT TO BE IN THE
POSITION OF OFFERING SOMETHING WE CAN'T COME THROUGH WITH OR NOT OFFERING
SOMETHING THAT WE COULD. (3)BE SURE TO INVITE SYLVAN TOMKINS TO
THE GEN. SESSION SINCE HE IS FRIEND OF COLBY AND ABELSON AND SYLVAN THEORY HAD A LOT TO DO WITH COLBY'S WORK.
END OF GIST OF COLBY CONVERSATION.

I SEARCHED AROUND IN DIRECTORIES LOOKING FOR THE LATEST IDEAS RE THE
WORKSHOP PROGRAM AND LOOKED AT THE ONE IN KAZ'S DIRECTORY.
ACCORDING TO THAT IN THE GEN SESSION PSYCH. PART COLBY AND SCHMIDT ARE
SCHEDULE TO SPEAK FOLLOWED BY A PANEL. THEREFORE, I DIDN'T CALL
ROGER SCHANK TO ASK HIM TO TALK IN PLACE OF ABELSON SINCE THERE WAS NO
IN PLACE OF ABELSON ON THE PROGRAM ANYMORE. SO WHAT SHOULD I DO ABOUT
THE PANEL??

FINALLY, TO REITERATE A MESSAGE OF THE OTHER DAY TO SAUL, I BELIEVE.
ROGER WANTS TO BRING RIESBECK ALONG PROBABLY AND COLLINS
WOULD LIKE TO BRING MARK MILLER ALONG. I SAID OK SINCE I HAD SAID IN
MY ORIGINAL INVITE LETTER THAT THAT WOULD BE OK AND THAT WE COULD COVER
ACCOMODATIONS, ETC. FOR SUCH A PERSON BUT NOT TRAVEL.

TO SUMMARIZE THE PSYCH. INVITE PART. IT APPEARS THAT ALL WHO ARE INVITED
ARE COMING. I HAVEN7T SPOKEN TO RIEGER SINCE HE WAS AT RUTGERS
BUT IAT THAT TIME HE WAS PLANNING ON COMING. I HAVE TRIED TO REACH HIM
SINCE TO CONFIRM BUT WITHOUT SUCCESS. RUMELHART IS A LITTLE
IFFY AND WILL BE HERE PROBABLY AT MOST FOR TWO DAYS...SUN. AND MON.
SO THAT IS THE STATUS OF THINGS.

PLEASE KEEP ME INFORMED.

Kaz,
I was talking with Bruce and Randy Davis yesterday, and we had
several suggestions they asked me to convey to you. The first issuehas
to do with the MYCIN technical session scheduled for Sunday morning. I
see that you have about 75 minutes set aside for this session, and therefore
wondered how you want it to be run. We thought that 2 or 3 brief (10-15
minute) informal presentations by project members might provide useful focus
for an additional 30-40 minutes of discussion. I doubt that people will have
a very good understanding of the implementation aspects of any of our
programs from the sessions on Saturday, so a somewhat technical although
brief presentation may be wise. We felt that simply demonstrating the
system in action would not be an adequate way to address some of the issues
that appear to be of interest to workshop participants (although demos and
informal interactions are of course also crucial to the success of the
symposium). If you have other ideas regarding the MYCIN technical session,
or if you have reservations about the approach we are suggesting, please let
us know.
Secondly, we reviewed the titles of the technical sessions that
are general in nature (i.e. not devoted to specific projects) and realized
that it was hard to get a good feel for what the actual content of those
discussions might include. I think I have referred to this point before in
notes to you. Perhaps some itemization of subtopics, or an attempt to
schedule sessions on specific but difficult problems for AI in medicine,
would end up allowing more involvement and preparation, even
though the coverage of the conference might necessarily become less compre-
hensive. For example, and this might be particularly useful since you are
hoping to lure some of the docs from Saturday to stay on for a couple of
days, the session currently titled 'Representation and Knowledge Acquisition'
might instead be focussed instead on 'What kind of medical inference and
knowledge can best be handled by current AI state0of-the-art, and once a
representation scheme for such applications is determined, how can we
efficiently acquire the necessary information from the medical experts with
whom we must interact?' Of course this last title is absurdly long and
might better be the kind of thing that would be placed on a program as an
explanation of a session with a more general title, but some kind of further
detail along these lines might well contribute to an effort to keep the
technical sessions from becoming a little vague in their subject matter.
Finally, we've all started looking at airline schedules and the
like, and are hoping to arrive at approximately the same time on Friday
night, but wanted to ask you whether we should plan on renting a car at
Newark. Are shuttle buses going to be available for conference participants,
or should we go ahead and get a car anyway 'cause we're apt to need one
around New Brunswick. Once again this raises the question of accomodation.
Is there someplace to stay close to the meeting site, or will a car for
transport be mandatory?
Thanks alot, Kaz. As you can see, we're all looking forward to the
workshop and are starting to think seriously about it even though it is
still 3 months away. And by the way, I've been meaning to ask what the
med school situation is going to be for your wife next year. Has that
managed to work out for the best?
Take care, and I'll look forward to hearing from you. Let us know
if you'd like any more organizational help from out at this end of things.
	Regards,
		Ted

THE PAPER THAT I HAVE WRITTEN FOR THE MIT CONFERENCE IS NOW SITTING IN THE
RUTGERS 10 AS MIT1.RNO ON MY ACCOUNT [3442,44] IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE
A "POSITION PAPER" AND ITS UPPER BOUND WAS 15 PAGES. ANYWAY, I THINK
THAT I HAVE DECIDED THAT IT IS DONE SO IF YOU WANT TO READ IT YOU
ARE INVITED. IF YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS I WOULD BE HAPPY TO HEAR THEM
AND IF THEY COME SOON ENOUGH I MIGHT BE ABLE TO CHANGE THINGS IF I
HAVE SAID ANYTHING PARTICULARLY STUPID OR OPAQUE.

WE ARE ANXIOUS TO RANK PRIORITIES BY INTEREST, POTENTIAL USE, AND NIH
SUPPORT. THERE ARE NOT MANY PERMUTATIONS OF SIX NAMES -- HERE IS
ONE THAT MORE OR LESS FITS OR RANKING CRITERIA:
   1. FALES (HIGHEST PRIORITY -- DESERVES FUNDING EVEN IF IT MEANS I
           DON'T COME)
   2. ROLLER
   3. MCLAFFERTY
   4. BIEMANN
   -----
   5. DOUGHERTY
   6. MCMURRAY

THERE IS A BIG GAP BETWEEN #4 AND #5 TO BE FILLED BY NAMES OF PEOPLE
AT THE OTHER NIH-SUPPORTED RESOURCES (BATELLE, RESEARCH TRIANGLE, AND
PITTSUBURGH). WE DO NOT HAVE THEIR NAMES, BUT BILL BAKER AT NIH CERTAINLY
DOES. WE THINK IT IS REASONABLE TO INVITE PEOPLE CLOSE TO RUTGERS
TO COME ON THEIR OWN MONEY WITH POSSIBLE SUPPLEMENTS FROM WORKSHOP
FUNDS -- BUT WE'LL LEAVE THAT UP TO YOU.
    REGARDS,

Although Bruce has already told you that no more attendees from the west
coast were coming other than those you already know about, I would like
to know if there are still any travel funds available for Steve Freer to
attend. I think both of you have met Steve, and know that he plays a key
role in the protein crystallography project. He would like to attend the
conference and workshop, contingent on the availability of travel funds.
I believe his presence would be beneficial to both him and other attendees.
Moreover, it would be an inducement to attract other macromolecular
crystallographers on the east coast who are interested in computer
networking and/or applications of A.I. In particular, it would be
particularly valuable to the SUMEX-AIM community if you would also invite
Carroll Johnson of Oak Ridge to the proceedings. Johnson is well known
for the creation of the ORTEP molecular display package. Although it is
not yet official, he will be joining our protein crystallography project next
September for one year. If you choose to invite him, his address is:

	Dr. Carroll K. Johnson
	Oak Ridge National Laboratory
	P.O. Box X
	Oak Ridge, Tennessee 37830

I can also suggest other prospective east coast attendees if you wish.
Thanks, Bob

GEORGE MILLER HAS ACCEPTED MEMBERSHIP IN THE AIM ADVISORY
COMMITTEE. THE NEXT MEETING OF THIS COMMITTEE (IN A TELECONFERENCE
MODE) WILL BE ON APRIL 22. I PLAN TO PRESENT A PROGRESS REPORT ON
THE AIM WORKSHOP AT THIS MEETING.
IT HAS BEEN SUGGESTED (AT THE LAST AIMEXEC TELECON) THAT THE
NEXT FACE-TO-FACE MEETING OF THE AIMADV COMMITTEE SHOULD BE AT
THE RUTGERS AIM-WORKSHOP. THE IDEA IS TO HAVE THE MEETING IN THE
LAST EVENING (ON THE 17). THIS IS BASED ON THE ASSUMPTION THAT
ALL THE AIMADV MEMBERS WILL ATTEND THE ENTIRE WORKSHOP.
